HAPPY HANUKKAH!

by Jerry Paige on Dec 22, 2008 00:37   0  Comments   Share

Hannukah, or as Adam Sandler would like to call it, the Eight Crazy Nights is a celebration of two miracles. One being a triumph of a small army of Jews known as the "Maccabees" against a much larger Greek army, hoping to impose a Hellenistic lifestyle on them around 2nd century BCE. The second miracle, closely related to the first is that after this very same victory, it turned out that much to their dissapointment, the Maccabees had only enough pure olive oil to light their "Menorah" (candelbra) for one night to celebrate their conquest, yet somehow the Menorah burned for eight days and nights. Here are a few other things that not everyone might know about Hanukkah.

  1. Hanukkah is really spelt "Chanukah". It just so happens that the "ch" is not pronounced as it is in "cheese" or "chowder" but rather as a guttural throaty sound not unlike the pronounciation of "Bach" in Johann Sebastian Bach.
  2. Foods fried in oil are typically the cuisine of choice during Hanukkah. This is due to the role that oil played in the origins of this celebration.
  3. The name "Maccabee" came from the Hebrew work for hammer or for hitting.

HOW TO ORGANIZE A CHRISTMAS PARTY

by Toni Wry on Dec 18, 2008 21:04   0  Comments   Share

So you want to organize a Christmas party, eh? By now, I hope you have decided on where, when, and what time you wish you to have this Shindig. Now let's organize this Christmas party!...

He's making a list,
checking it twice,
gonna find out who's naughty or nice.

1. The first think you must do when organizing a Christmas party is to make a list of friends and check it twice, find out whose been naughty or nice. You get the point. Once you have created a guest list of all your friends, create a flyer for your event. You don't have to create anything extravagant, just a simple flyer that tells people the where, when, what, and How's of the party. Once that is done, upload your flyer to Eventorb.com. Eventorb.com provides many features to help you send evites to all your friends; you can even import your friends from your webmail address books into EventOrb. However, if you prefer to send invitations the old fashion way, just head out to the store and buy some Christmas themed invitations and send them out ASAP, so as to give people enough time to get ready for the festivities.

 Oh, bring us a figgy pudding;
Oh, bring us a figgy pudding;
Oh, bring us a figgy pudding and a cup of good cheer

2. I'm not too sure what a figgy pudding is, but it sounds delicious! You can't have a party without food, can you? You'll need lots of food for this Shindig. So get a head start on your holiday menu. Do you wish to have entrees at this party? No, an entree is not the word "enter" with a reverse "r" and an extra "e". If this word scares you, then perhaps you just need to have finger foods at your party. Click Here for some fabulous finger foods. Remember to have enough food for everyone to consume. If you are more interested in going all out for your party, then perhaps you should get familiar with the term "entree" or even the term "caterer".

NATIONAL DING-A-LING DAY!

by Toni Wry on Dec 12, 2008 05:00   0  Comments   Share
 December 12th-Please keep your mind out of the gutter. National Ding-A-Ling day has nothing to do with a body part; it is a  holiday that is celebrated every year on December 12th. On National Ding-A-Ling day, expect to see a lot people behaving bizarre. It is essentially a day for people to behave  abnormally than usual. If you are already a bit weird, then this is a holiday made just for you.  Here are a few things you could do to become a Ding-A-Ling for a day:

1. Wear two different color socks for the day. This is not so bizarre but people will stop and look-I should know

2. As you walk down the street, greet everyone with a kind hello-Trust me, this is bizarre behavior in 2008.

3. Take a moment and stare at somebody for a minute-He or she will think you're bizarre or plain crazy.

And if you really want to get Jiggy with it, you can make like Kala Kaiwi and get 67 percings, tattoos over 75% of your body, make 4 inch holes in your earlobes, insert silicon implants on your head, screw metal spikes into the top of your skull and split your tongue. Happy Ding-A-Ling day!

Festival For The Souls of Dead Whales

by Jerry Paige on Dec 11, 2008 00:12   0  Comments   Share

soul of dead whales

December 10
- The Inuit people of northern Alaska hold the souls of whales in high regard, praying for their spirits past the moment when they sleep with the fishes....so to speak.

The Inuit have been hunting bowhead whales for several thousand years. Subsistence whaling is crucial enough to them that there are whole ceremonies and beliefs associated with them. For one thing, they believe that the animals they hunt have spirits. There are many rituals associated with the hunt itself and three celebrations each year designed to show respect for the souls of the animals, bring luck to the hunt, and to give thanks to the spirits of the animals that have been killed for food.
