How to Organize a Fashion Show

So you want to have a fashion show, but you don't know how to go about having one? Not to worry! You have come to the right place! Remember that a fashion show is a big event so you're going to need assistants to help with lighting, getting models ready backstage etc... If you're having trouble finding assistants, simply ask a few of your friends or family members to assist you.

Step one:The Venue

A fashion show is like any other event and as such, you will have to search for a venue that will hold a number of people. Make sure that your venue has a runway or a "path" that can be used as a catwalk. Some venues to consider:your local school auditorium, a park , or even your local community center.

Step two: The Invitation

You will need to send out invitations and perhaps post a few flyers around town with details of your fashion show. Do you have a theme in mind? Will this show be held in spring, summer, fall, or winter?  At what time will the fashion show occur? These are some important details that you should keep in mind when making your invitations. If you need help coming up with a theme, then think of what type of music you would like to play at the show. The genre of the music will help you to determine the theme of the show. Also keep in mind what kind of clothing you will have the models wear.  Will your models be wearing bathing suits? Lingerie? There are so many endless possibilities.

How to Create a Snazzy Event Flyer in 5 easy Steps using Photoshop

by Jonathan Awotwi on Jan 14, 2009 00:46   12  Comments   Share

Having an event without a flyer is much like making a movie without a preview or a teaser clip. Not only that, on EventOrb your events will not show up in the calendar and will be less likely to be featured on the front page if you don't have an event flyer. I know, I know, you have two left feet when it comes to graphic design and every designer wants his weight in Benjamins just to walk to his computer let alone open up Photoshop and hook you up with a design for your flyer. Well not to worry, if you have Photoshop and a few minutes here is how to hook yourself up with a simple yet appealing design.

  1. Create a new image in Photoshop with dimensions 2100x1050. As a rule of thumb, it's always best to start out with a large image if you're desiging for print unless you're working with vector images.
  2. Select a bright yellow for the foreground color, and red for the background color. I used #fdf403 for my yellow and #f94313 for my red.

  3. In the toolbar, click Filter > Render > Clouds

  4. You now have a great background for your event. Add the title of your event to the flyer. Large Impact font with a white foreground seems to blend well with this background, but you can get a little creative. Add a black outer glow with the following settings to create a smokin' effect, and that's it. You're Done!

  5. Okay, well, you're almost done. The flyer looks a litte bare at this point. To fix that, all you need are a couple of well placed inanimate objects. I chose two. A pair of sunglasses and an imposing looking skyscraper. I have added the two images in the zip file attached to this post.

There, now you've got a spanking brand new flyer to upload to your event on EventOrb. Don't forget to select a nice theme for your event page when setting it up. Also check out other flyer designs in the flyer topic  of our forums.

TIPS:
  • Cut out the area around the sunglasses and the building before adding them to the image and play around with their blending modes to make them blend in with the backgound.
  • Add a mask to the skyscraper layer and then a gradient to the top of the skyscraper. That will make your skyscraper look like it's disappearing in the clouds.

Too fly for words - A glimpse at the hottest Event Flyers on the street part 1

by Jonathan Awotwi on Jul 22, 2008 08:20   1  Comments   Share

Ever wondered why almost every flyer that got handed to you in the street had a picture of a scantily clad woman on it? You guessed it,it turns heads and grabs attention. Does it work? Well run a little experiment in your spare time. Hold on to about five flyer that you come across from promoters, lay them out flat on a table and pick the one that grabs your attention the most. If it's not the one with the pretty lady posing, come back here and post a comment bringing it to my attention, you're probably on to something big.

Anyway this post is dedicated to the hardworking flyer designers out there, whose art is often ignored. I think every artist, regardless of your preferred medium should give flyer design a go at some point. See if you can create a design that will grab people's attention in a community proliferated with flyers and such. Here are some flyers that do it for me.

Talk about leaving stuff to the imagination, aint nuthin but a damn silhoutte in this thing! It works because you get to fill in the blanks, which depending on your imagination makes for a hell of a flyer. This is simply a work of art. Definitely an eye catcher
I like the 70's Movie Poster look and feel of this flyer. This gets the job done, and still leaves enough clothes on the model.
If you can't excite them, then mystify them. This one is oozing with mystery that lures you in. Ahh Illustrations! I love illustrated flyers. The majority of them always have a smooth clean look. Probably something to do with the fact that I never grew out of my "cartoon" phase (seriously).
Another eye grabbing illustration An artsy head turner.
