The 120th Rose Parade - Hats Off To Entertainment

by Jerry Paige on Dec 31, 2008 23:59   0  Comments   Share

January 1st
- If you're a rose living on the west coast and looking for work this weekend then have no fear, there's lots of work for roses duing the Rose Parade or the Rose  Bowl -- here's your chance to be strapped daintily onto a Rose Parade float and and paraded infront of millions (approximately 425 million) of spectators from around the world. For all others, if you are around Pasadena's Colorado Boulevard in Los Angeles around New Year's this might be an event worth checking out. Some of the floats on display take a whole year to construct in a tradition that dates back to 1890. Throw in a football game and some crazy beats from the 24 marching bands that regularly show up and you have yourself a party. Click here to read more about the Rose Parade.

Much ado about Festivus

by Jerry Paige on Dec 23, 2008 00:11   0  Comments   Share

festivusDecember 23 - Get out your tinsel-free aluminum poles and dust off that list of grievances, Festivus is upon us. This is one of those situations where I find the legiticimacy of a given establishment questionable, yet am eager to embrace it. Yup! Festivus works for me.  So for all of you non-conformists out there, here is how you get into the Festivus spirit:

  1. Get yourself an aluminum pole with absolutely nothing on it (never mind the image, trust me on this one).
  2. Gather the family around for a Festivus dinner treat (any old dinner will do really)
  3. Commence the airing of grievances: this is the fun part, everyone takes their turn telling other members of the family what douche bags they've been.
  4. And then comes the Feats of Strength -- now pay close attention this gets complicated. Traditionally, the head of the household selects one person at the Festivus celebration and challenges that person to a wrestling match. The person may decline if they have something else to do, such as pull a double shift at work. Tradition states that Festivus is not over until the head of the household is pinned in a wrestling match.

And that's basically how it all goes down. No decorations, no gifts, no hohohos, just a Festivus for the Rest of Us.

National Firefighters Day

by Jerry Paige on Dec 15, 2008 00:32   0  Comments   Share

December 15th - Firefighters typically respond to anywhere between 2,300,000 and 8,700,000 fires yearly. They save millions of lives and millions of dollars in property. We need not go too far in history to discover the challenges they face or the bravery they display in performing their duties-- afterall it is human instinct to run away from a fire, however you'll usually find these folks doing the opposite. Truth be told I owe my survival through my college roommate's culinary experiments to firefighters, so don't hold a grudge just because your girlfriend loves their outfit -- say thank you to a firefighter if you meet one today.
