HAPPY PEPPER POT DAY

by Toni Wry on Dec 29, 2008 02:55   0  Comments   Share

December 29th- Happy Pepper Pot Day. Huh, what? Yeah, you know i had to get this one in before the year ends. Pepper Pot Day is just one of those bizarre holidays that makes you wonder why there isn't a national Blue Jeans day. Is there a holiday for denim wear? Well, happy pepper pot day to you all and enjoy this special day by making some hearty chicken or beef soup. For those of you who live in a cold climate, this day is meant just for you!

History:In Valley Forge, during the bitter winter of 1777-1778, hunger soared and hope quailed in America's poor Continental Army. General Washington asked his cook to feed his men at any cost. With only scraps of tripe from the butcher and a handful of peppercorns, the cook produced a hearty soup - the creation of Pepper Pot Soup. Celebrate with a pot of thick, hot and somewhat spicy soup today. Most people now substitute chicken, beef or shrimp for the tripe.

Much ado about Festivus

by Jerry Paige on Dec 23, 2008 00:11   0  Comments   Share

festivusDecember 23 - Get out your tinsel-free aluminum poles and dust off that list of grievances, Festivus is upon us. This is one of those situations where I find the legiticimacy of a given establishment questionable, yet am eager to embrace it. Yup! Festivus works for me.  So for all of you non-conformists out there, here is how you get into the Festivus spirit:

  1. Get yourself an aluminum pole with absolutely nothing on it (never mind the image, trust me on this one).
  2. Gather the family around for a Festivus dinner treat (any old dinner will do really)
  3. Commence the airing of grievances: this is the fun part, everyone takes their turn telling other members of the family what douche bags they've been.
  4. And then comes the Feats of Strength -- now pay close attention this gets complicated. Traditionally, the head of the household selects one person at the Festivus celebration and challenges that person to a wrestling match. The person may decline if they have something else to do, such as pull a double shift at work. Tradition states that Festivus is not over until the head of the household is pinned in a wrestling match.

And that's basically how it all goes down. No decorations, no gifts, no hohohos, just a Festivus for the Rest of Us.

NATIONAL DING-A-LING DAY!

by Toni Wry on Dec 12, 2008 05:00   0  Comments   Share
December 12th-Please keep your mind out of the gutter. National Ding-A-Ling day has nothing to do with a body part; it is a  holiday that is celebrated every year on December 12th. On National Ding-A-Ling day, expect to see a lot people behaving bizarre. It is essentially a day for people to behave  abnormally than usual. If you are already a bit weird, then this is a holiday made just for you.  Here are a few things you could do to become a Ding-A-Ling for a day:

1. Wear two different color socks for the day. This is not so bizarre but people will stop and look-I should know

2. As you walk down the street, greet everyone with a kind hello-Trust me, this is bizarre behavior in 2008.

3. Take a moment and stare at somebody for a minute-He or she will think you're bizarre or plain crazy.

And if you really want to get Jiggy with it, you can make like Kala Kaiwi and get 67 percings, tattoos over 75% of your body, make 4 inch holes in your earlobes, insert silicon implants on your head, screw metal spikes into the top of your skull and split your tongue. Happy Ding-A-Ling day!

Festival For The Souls of Dead Whales

by Jerry Paige on Dec 11, 2008 00:12   0  Comments   Share

soul of dead whales

December 10
- The Inuit people of northern Alaska hold the souls of whales in high regard, praying for their spirits past the moment when they sleep with the fishes....so to speak.

The Inuit have been hunting bowhead whales for several thousand years. Subsistence whaling is crucial enough to them that there are whole ceremonies and beliefs associated with them. For one thing, they believe that the animals they hunt have spirits. There are many rituals associated with the hunt itself and three celebrations each year designed to show respect for the souls of the animals, bring luck to the hunt, and to give thanks to the spirits of the animals that have been killed for food.

DECEMBER 10TH IS CALL IN GAY DAY:DAY WITHOUT A GAY

by Toni Wry on Dec 10, 2008 11:40   1  Comments   Share

December 10th- December 10th is "Call In To Gay Day", which is essentially a day to call off from work to show support for the legalization of gay marriage after Prop 8. In the these hard economic times, you may not be able to call in from work, but if you are able to, here are a few things you could do to show support:

1)spend the day volunteering to advance equal rights for all.

2)Contact your government representatives and ask them to support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would protect lesbian and gay workers.

3)Just have yourself a Gay Ol' Day!

~History: Gay rights activists are encouraging gay Americans to "call in gay" today -- skipping work to demonstrate the importance of gays in the workplace.Day Without A Gay, as it is being called, one of several grass-roots activities -- boycotts to marches -- that have sprung up in California and across the U.S. in the aftermath of passage of Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in California((Source)
